Weekend Fire Engulfs House in Luray
Firefighters successfully battle blaze while protecting nearby homes
LURAY, Va. — On Sunday morning, fire crews battled a significant residential blaze on the corner of Mechanic and N. Hawksbill Streets.
According to a media release from the Luray Fire Department (LFD), Company 1 was dispatched to a structure fire at 10:30 a.m. on February 2, 2025.
Approximately 25 firefighters responded along with Engine 9, Engine 12, Tanker 1, and Tower 1.
Neighbors in the area reported a heat intense enough to melt siding. Firefighters temporarily evacuated residents and doused nearby structures to deter flames from spreading. The odor of smoke was detected for miles.
Medic 230, Luray Police Department and the Page County Sheriff's Office also responded. Engine 25 from Stanley Volunteer Fire Department Company 24 filled LFD quarters to cover other potential area incidents during the fire.
According to online records, the property changed hands from private ownership to a rental company in November. Not long after the sale, neighbors noticed the building’s tenants vacating permanently. The recent presence of workmen seemed to indicate a remodel or building updates.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by law enforcement.
No injures were reported.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. Sunday, what remained of the charred structure was razed.
