Subject Killed After Attacking Shenandoah County Deputy
SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. — Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting.
According to a media release from VSP Public Relations Director Robin Lawson, the incident occurred Sunday, August 18, 2025.
At approximately 6:18 p.m., a Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of Alum Springs Road following a report of an attempted sexual assault involving a juvenile.
When the deputy arrived, he encountered a man outside the home.
Investigators say the deputy attempted to take the suspect into custody, but a struggle ensued.
During the altercation, the suspect allegedly assaulted the deputy with a pair of handcuffs and tried to take his weapon. The deputy fired his sidearm, striking the man. The suspect died at the scene.
The deputy, who was working alone at the time and wearing a body camera, was taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the struggle.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Manassas will conduct an autopsy on the subject.
Child Protective Services has also been notified in connection with the alleged attempted assault involving the juvenile.
This incident remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper Field Office, with assistance from local troopers and the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office.
