STANLEY, Va. — Drivers can expect increased police patrols in Stanley on Saturday as officers take part in a nationwide impaired-driving enforcement campaign.
“Saturation Saturday’ is an annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) campaign held the Saturday before Labor Day.
The campaign is intended to reduce impaired-driving crashes and fatalities during the Labor Day holiday period, when increased travel and celebrations can put more impaired drivers on the road.
Officers will be watching for impaired drivers as well as other dangerous driving behaviors, including speeding and distracted driving.
Alcohol isn’t the only substance that can impair driving. Marijuana, illegal drugs and some prescription and over-the-counter medications can also affect reaction time, coordination, judgment and alertness, making it unsafe to get behind the wheel.
MADD and participating law enforcement agencies are urging people to arrange a safe way home before celebrations begin, including using a designated driver or rideshare service.
After a week of sharing safe driving tips, the SPD posted the following social media message on Friday:
