Mother of Country Music Star Spencer Hatcher Killed in Virginia Home Invasion

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. — The mother of country music star Spencer Hatcher was the victim of a deadly home invasion that occurred late Sunday night.
At 11:58 p.m. on August 4, 2025, Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) deputies responded to a call of an armed intruder at to a residence in the 13000 block of North Valley Pike.
When deputies arrived, they found the homeowner, 65-year-old Michael Hatcher, outside the residence. Hatcher, who placed the emergency call, had visible injuries from a confrontation with the intruder, according to an RCSO media release.
The intruder, identified as 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker of Pikesville, Maryland, was found dead in the driveway.
Inside the home, deputies discovered the body of 62-year-old Holly Hatcher, Michael’s wife, who had been fatally stabbed.
Investigators determined Walker entered the home armed with a large knife, killing Holly before attacking Michael.
The struggle continued outside, where Michael retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and shot Walker, ending the assault, authorities said.
Virginia State Police joined RCSO in the homicide investigation. RCSO Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson described the crime as both violent and unusual.
“This investigation is still ongoing with RCSO and VSP both working very hard on discovering all of the facts and highly unusual circumstances involved in this violent and tragic crime,” Hutcheson said. “Out of respect for the privacy of the victim’s family, no additional details will be released.”
Hutcheson added that Walker had no prior criminal history.
Authorities said Walker had traveled from Maryland to Rockingham County two days earlier, renting a campsite at Endless Caverns and purchasing the knife later used in the attack from a Walmart in Timberville.
That same weekend, Walker allegedly drove his vehicle into the entrance of the Endless Caverns gift shop, though nothing was reported stolen. Police searched for him following that incident but did not locate him until the home invasion call came in late Sunday.
“This is 31 years in law enforcement for me, and I have never seen anything like it in my entire career,” Hutcheson said.
The Hatchers’ son, country musician Spencer Hatcher, has canceled upcoming performances following his mother’s death, including appearances at an Ohio music festival and the Rockingham County Fair.
“It is with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that – due to a monumental loss in our family – I must cancel my upcoming shows,” Spencer Hatcher said in a statement on social media. “I hope to make these dates up to my fans in the future. I appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones. We ask that everyone please respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
