Minor Storm Causes Major Power Outage in Luray
LURAY, Va. — A brief but powerful storm caused widespread power outages in Page County on Wednesday after a tree fell into utility lines.
The storm moved through the area shortly after 7:30 p.m. on May 13, 2026. Electrical service in a substantial portion of Luray was interrupted almost immediately.
According to a Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative (SVEC) spokesperson, a large maple tree split on North Deford Avenue, causing significant damage and creating what officials described as a “complicated repair scene.”
By the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, an all-night “coordinated effort” by SVEC crews had restored power to most of the approximately 1,900 affected customers.
The outage led to partial or full-day closures for several Main Street and East Luray Shopping Center businesses. Ralph Dean Park was also temporarily closed.
At approximately 12:15 p.m. Thursday, SVEC announced that a new utility pole had been successfully installed.
Shortly thereafter, electric service to remaining affected customers was restored.
