Local Library's At-Home Streaming Service Offers Ad-Free Movies
Save money with your Massanutten Regional card
LURAY, Va. — Massanutten Regional Library (MRL) is one of a select few library systems in the country to offer a streaming service similar to Netflix or Hulu. Anyone with a MRL library card can take advantage of the service — for FREE, and without ads.
The platform, called “Kanopy,” features movies, documentaries, foreign films, classic cinema, independent films and more.
The Kanopy app is available for download on all platforms, and can be enjoyed via TV, smart phone or tablet. Since MRL covers all associated costs, there’s absolutely no charge to library patrons.
To begin watching, users simply need to select the Massanutten Regional Library system on the app and then enter a library card number and PIN number. Users can then browse the selection or search for individual titles. Items can be saved as “favorites” to watch later.
Will you find 2023 or 2024 releases on Kanopy? Probably not. But since many older movies are only available to rent via paid streaming services, the savings via Kanopy can be substantial.
One example, The Great Santini, starring Robert Duvall, is below.
With Kanopy, members are given 10 virtual viewing “tickets” per month (most movies “cost” two to four tickets). Once “purchased for viewing,” users have 48 hours to watch each selection.
Unused tickets do not carry over. If all tickets are used in one month, 10 brand new tickets are issued on the 1st of each following month.
