Fire Crews Extinguish East Luray Blaze on Final Day of 2025
Officials strongly remind public to avoid driving over fire hoses
LURAY, Va. — The Luray Fire Department responded to an outbuilding fire in East Luray on Wednesday morning.
According to officials, the incident occurred just before 10 a.m. on December 31, 2025, at the intersection of Reservoir Avenue and Second Street.
Engine 12, Engine 9 and Command 1 arrived to find an outbuilding fully involved, with two nearby structures exposed to the fire.
Firefighters advanced two hose lines to extinguish the blaze and cool exposures.
Engine 9 established a water supply by reverse-laying to a hydrant at the corner of Reservoir Avenue and Massanutten Avenue.
Crews remained on scene for approximately one hour, suppressing hot spots and ensuring the fire was fully extinguished.
Fire officials issued this important notice:
We want to use this call as a reminder that if you see fire hose laid across a roadway (and even though the road may not be blocked off yet), under Virginia law, it is ILLEGAL to drive over a fire hose.
PLEASE - NEVER drive over any fire hose whether it be charged with water or not.
Fire hose is the fireman’s lifeline at any fire. Additional pressure from the weight of a vehicle could cause catastrophic damage not only to the line, but to firemen, should the line rupture or become damaged.
50’ of 3” supply hose is about $800+ to replace.
Virginia's Uniform Fine Schedule lists driving over a fire hose as a violation with fines under $100, but this can escalate with additional charges including “improper driving” — for fines up to $500 plus restitution.
The outbuilding involved in Wednesday’s blaze was a total loss, and two additional structures sustained heat damage.
The fire is believed to have been accidental. No injuries were reported.
