LURAY, Va. — On Saturday, local police responded to two separate physical altercations at the Page Valley Fairgrounds.
According to a statement from the Luray Police Department (LPD), the first incident occurred at 10:06 p.m. inside the demolition derby arena.
LPD officers and Page County EMS broke up the fight and dispersed the crowd. Several individuals were issued trespass notices barring them from the fairgrounds.
About 10 minutes later, officers were called to an unrelated fight at the same location.
LPD officers, along with the Page County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies, took Calvin Turner, 50, of Shenandoah, into custody.
Turner was charged with two counts of Class 6 felony assault on law enforcement, one count of Class 3 felony malicious wounding, one count of Class 1 misdemeanor resisting arrest, and one count of Class 1 misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
RAW VIDEO OF BOTH INCIDENTS:
“Typically, there are very few incidents at the fair,” said LPD Chief C.S. “Bow” Cook, even though an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 people attend the events.
“Derby night can be high-tension,” said Cook. “I’m very proud of how my officers responded.”
Chief Cook went on to also thank the Page County Sheriff’s Office, Page County EMS and the Stanley Fire Department for helping keep spectators and participants safe.
“You never know what can transpire,” he said, “but our first responders really stepped up.”
Both of Saturday’s incidents remain under investigation.
Was wondering what happened. Thanks for the details.
