Closure Scheduled for Old Rag Trailhead in Shenandoah National Park
Work expected to last through November
LURAY, Va. — Shenandoah National Park will begin an infrastructure improvement project at the Old Rag trailhead on May 4, 2026.
During construction, the main parking lot will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Work is expected to continue through November.
Visitors will still be able to access the Old Rag trailhead using existing overflow parking areas and a temporary access trail.
Portable restrooms will be available in both overflow lots, and one lot will include a temporary contact station.
Day-use tickets are still required through November.
The improvement project includes installation of a permanent contact station, as well as regrading and paving of the parking lot to address drainage issues and reduce storm-related closures.
Contractors will also install a new vault toilet with accessible walkways.
Shenandoah National Park headquarters is located in Luray.
